UrbanThings launches social distancing technology with Ipswich Buses
UrbanThings’ latest innovation has just launched in partnership with Ipswich Buses! Our social distancing technology for public transport generates future occupancy predictions, and shows passengers how busy a particular service will be at the time when they board.
The launch of this new technology follows a grant that was awarded to UrbanThings by Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency. The grant was given to develop the technology needed to ensure safer travel on public transport following the COVID-19 pandemic.
The occupancy display and predictions solution
The UrbanThings solution, which is integrated into our smart mobility platform Ticketless™, captures live vehicle occupancy data, generates future predictions and feeds these directly back to the operator and their passengers.
Ipswich Buses, who already operate their mobile ticketing through Ticketless, can now indicate to their passengers how busy a particular service will be. This will encourage passengers back onto services by showing them that there is the space to travel safely, and that their journey won’t be overcrowded.
Ipswich Buses were keen to implement this new technology. Steve Bryce, MD at Ipswich Buses said: “When we entered into our partnership with UrbanThings to develop our M-ticket and bus tracking app we didn’t just want a “one size fits all” off the shelf product, but wanted a company that we could work with and add new features as they were developed or became needed. The live occupancy feature is the next step in the ongoing development of our app and will be an important tool in giving people the confidence to use the bus and get our customers back on the bus. Once again UrbanThings have listened to our needs and developed a solution that works for Ipswich Buses and its customers”
Carl Partridge, CEO at UrbanThings said: “This is such a pivotal time for public transport. As offices and schools re-open, it’s vital that our transport systems get back up and running safely. Passengers will only begin to use services again when they have the confidence that it’s safe to do so. Our innovative technology gives them the information they need to make informed decisions about their journeys so they can travel safely.”
