South Yorkshire’s TravelMaster Approves Extension as TravelMaster App Surpasses Million Revenue Milestone
TravelMaster, the commercial organisation owned and operated by the region’s transport companies, has signed a contract extension. The extension follows the success of the new TravelMaster app, which recently crossed the million revenue milestone less than a year after its launch. This achievement highlights the widespread adoption of the transport app, which boasts over 10,000 users and continues to grow across South Yorkshire.
Working in collaboration with transport technology expert UrbanThings, TravelMaster unveiled the new TravelMaster mobile app last year. This innovative app was designed to streamline the digital ticket retail process, using the ITSO smartcard standard, common across the operators served by TravelMaster. The launch of the app proved to be a game-changer, offering passengers a single platform for purchasing and loading tickets onto their TravelMaster smartcards, and recording over half a million pounds in revenue within only six months before doubling that figure just two months later.
Built upon UrbanHub, the smart transport platform powered by UrbanThings and deployed across the UK, Europe, and North America, the TravelMaster app is available free of charge to passengers.
The project’s excellence was underscored by the recent nomination as a finalist in the “Ticketing Enabler of the Year” category at the Transport Ticketing Awards 2024.
Adam Toone, CEO of UrbanThings, commented: “We’re proud of what we have achieved in such a short time. As a technology supplier, we remain dedicated to providing passengers with convenient, reliable and sustainable transportation solutions for years to come, building trust and confidence in public transport systems. Working in partnership with TravelMaster will pave the way for ongoing improvements and long-term benefits for passengers in South Yorkshire.
John Henshall, General Manager of TravelMaster, added: “Since I began my tenure at TravelMaster two years ago I set out to understand how we could improve our services for passengers whilst also working within the constraints of a complex multi-operator ticketing environment. It was clear from customer feedback that ticket purchase was overly complex, outdated and not customer friendly. The solution implemented by UrbanThings has surpassed expectations and attracted customers in a way we were not expecting, with customers migrating mainly from other non-digital retail channels as well as attracting some new passengers.” ire.
By working together, TravelMaster and UrbanThings aim to streamline travel processes and contribute to the growth and future of South Yorkshire’s transportation network. The app continues to enhance user experience with the recent release of the TravelMaster app update, developing features like Quick Sync, which allows unregistered smartcards to load tickets, or the ‘Buy again’ option for regular travellers.
